Meet the Quest Leaders: Chungking Unwrapped – A Journey Beyond Bias

Hosted by Diversity Hub at Chungking Mansions, this Quest invites participants to move beyond media stereotypes and experience one of Hong Kong’s most misunderstood spaces through a multi-sensory journey of culture, story and connection.

Q: What conventional wisdom does this Quest flip?

Rather than viewing Chungking Mansions through the conventional, sensationalised lens of a chaotic or intimidating maze, participants learn to look past surface impressions. By the end, they leave having physically felt their own biases dissolve.

Q: Why do people need this Quest right now?

Waiting a year turns transformation into a “someday” goal. Experiencing Chungking Unwrapped now allows participants to take immediate action and start building bridges across cultures when our community needs it most.

Q: What makes this Quest uniquely relevant for Hong Kong right now?

While Hong Kong prides itself on being “Asia’s World City,” the day-to-day reality often remains socially fragmented. Chungking Mansions sits at the centre of this paradox — a microcosm of global connectivity that is still misunderstood or avoided by many.

Q: What is the single biggest “lightbulb moment” you predict participants will have?

The moment when sensory overload transforms into hospitality. When a scent initially registered as “foreign” becomes recognisable, and a dense hallway reveals itself as a thriving neighbourhood. In that instant, the mental map of the city rewrites itself.

Q: Complete this sentence: “People will walk into this Quest feeling ______, but they will walk out

feeling ______.”

People will walk into this Quest feeling cautiously curious, but they will walk out feeling deeply connected.

How often do we move through familiar places without truly seeing the stories they hold?

Begin your Quest at Diversity Hub, home to Hong Kong’s first ethnically diverse community exhibition, where you’ll explore the city’s rich multicultural heritage and the contributions of communities that have helped shape Hong Kong. From there, step into the Centre for Refugees and experience a thought-provoking refugee simulation that offers insight into the uncertainty, complexity, and resilience behind journeys of displacement.

This eye-opening Quest invites participants to challenge assumptions, deepen empathy and reflect on what belonging looks like in one of the world’s most diverse cities.
